Senior Session Styling Tips

What should you wear for your photos?  Here are some tips, guidelines and advice for you!
Ultimately, you should feel great about how you look, because confidence is key in looking your best!

  • The Simple Senior Session includes 2 outfits – the one you wear when you show up, and one on location change. I’ll have a pop up tent for you to use as a changing room if needed.

  • We all have our own style, and I want your senior session to reflect you! Choose clothing that you would normally wear, but step it up a notch. Add some jewelry, a hat, a scarf, a belt, or some other accessory. Mix up your clothing from dressy to casual – For example:

    • For girls, perhaps jeans and a cute top/sweater/tee, and a flowy sundress. If you want a little more drama than your every day look I have some great resources for gorgeous rental dresses that are super fun to wear and photograph amazingly!

    • For guys, maybe a plain tee and jeans, an unbuttoned shirt to put over this for some photos, and a nice button-down shirt or sweater for a dressier look.

    • Bringing accessories along like hats, jackets, scarves, etc. that can be added/removed for a different look is a great way to get more variety from your outfits.

    • Hats are a great accessory and can add a quick, easy and fun look change, but please bring it with you. If you wear it to your session we risk having to deal with the dreaded hat head!

    • Be sure to bring along shoes to match each outfit. However, if we are shooting at the beach I prefer the barefoot look so I’ll likely ask you to slip them off. (Make sure those feet are presentable!)

  • Your hands will show in some of your shots. Ladies, make sure your nails are either polish free, or freshly polished and free of chips or partially grown out color. Guys, make sure nails are clean and trimmed.

  • Make-up should be done like you usually wear it, but slightly darker, and with careful attention to eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara as your eyes will be the focus in many of your shots. If you choose to wear false lashes, make sure they are applied properly and not peeling at the corners.

  • Always try your clothing on in advance to be sure it fits comfortably and is flattering. Bend over, sit down, spin, walk etc. and make sure that you don’t have skin showing where it shouldn’t be and that you’re able to do such movements confidently. I ask my seniors to move around, so we don’t want to be worried about straps showing or things coming untucked!

  • I find it best to avoid shirts with large or obvious logos. Graphic tees can be ok for some photos, but often end up partially covered in poses and end up unrecognizable and distracting.

  • If you plan on wearing a dress (or skirt), I recommend choosing one that will show movement from wind, or from walking, spinning, etc. rather than a completely fitted one.

  • Be sure to run your choices by mom and dad!

  • Last, but ABSOLUTELY not least, make sure each piece of clothing is clean and wrinkle-free. Wrinkles WILL SHOW in photos!
