family Session Styling Tips
What should you wear for your photos? Here are some tips, guidelines and advice for you!
Ultimately, you should feel great about how you look, because confidence is key in looking your best!
We all have our own style, and I want your family’s session to reflect you! Choose clothing that you would normally wear, but step it up a notch. Consider the colors in your home and in your closet and choose a color palette that will compliment.
First step is always to start with Mom’s outfit. I promise, it is much easier to find things for the rest of the family than it is for Mom. I love when moms wear things with movement, like long dresses or skirts, but if that isn't where you’re comfortable that’s ok too! The MOST important thing is that you choose something that flatters you and makes you feel confident. If you don’t like your outfit now, you aren't going to love it when you look at your photos on the wall either!
Coordinate the rest of your family to compliment each other, but I find it best to avoid putting kids in matching outfits. If you choose a plaid button shirt for one kid, maybe pick a coordinating solid shirt with a vest for another, as an example. If you want everyone in jeans, try to vary the wash of the jeans a bit so legs don't all blend in together.
Don’t fight unnecessary fights! If a kid hates wearing dresses, let it go, let them wear pants and a cute top. If wearing a sweater or button up is going to make someone grumpy, a brand new henley or waffle knit shirt can look just as nice!
SHOES are important! Take a look at the whole outfit from head to toe. Athletic shoes with a dressy outfit will stand out, and not in a positive way. Make sure shoes are also clean and don’t look super worn out. Dress shoes aren’t a must at all, just make sure the shoes match the vibe you are going for. If sneakers are a must, consider choosing something along the lines of Converse or Vans rather than athletic shoes. *All that being said, if we are shooting in the sand, I’ll ask for everyone to ditch their shoes, so disregard this section for beach sessions.
Some general things to avoid, large and bold patterns, neon colors, graphic tees and shirts with large logos across the front.
